If you know me, you know rules aren't really my thing but are needed from time to time. We probably need some here. I'd like to just say "Play nice y'all and don't be mean" and that would cover it but life doesn't work that way so I guess we need rules.
This will be a work in progress. I'll sticky a thread with the rules and add to them as need be. I also really need suggestions for rules. Please post your suggestions. I'll probably use them.

Hey OOM, I posted about the need for rules in my first post over in New Member Introductions, I am a bit technical and might be of some help on the techie side of things. Some suggestions, No copyrighted material - Protects you and the site from legal consequences No spam - Should be obvious why I am willing to help be a moderator if you need one, I haven't gotten in trouble on Wrong Planet and I am usually capable of using good judgement. I'll admit I have never been a forum moderator but have been a chat moderator in the past.

I think that most of the rules should be simple common sense. Try to be civil and don't deliberately set out to annoy other members, that sort of stuff. Does the site even need moderators at all?

Hey, maybe we could have a conch, like in Lord Of The Flies!

Well, we do to remove spam and ban spambots or trolls and their posts. Also I'm sure at some point there will be a conflict that somebody wants somebody in some kind of authority to settle and I'd really rather that not be me. Because I'll just piss everybody off more probably. So, somebody with tact would be good, or at least who can fake it. I can but I rarely want to anymore. So we need them for that but I totally agree with common sense rules. I think WP went overboard with the rules about can't say this or that, etc, etc, etc, and the way people jump on them and argue about how they shouldn't be able to say this or that either. I mean it's the internet. It's a forum. It's fun but it's got no real impact on your circumstances. It's not a huge deal. Our views won't change the world. I hope the common sense thing works out. It's not very common anymore ;-)

I'm autistic and I don't respond well to anyone telling me what I can or cannot do. I left both WP & AC partly because of moderators. Rather than wait for a disagreement to arise with a moderator here I'll preempt that situation by leaving now. I thought that this was going to be somewhere different but already it's beginning to conform to the same standard forum format as all the others.

If thats what you want to do, ok, but the rules are just common sense. I seriously doubt any of the people here now would be breaking those rules. As long as you aren't planning to spam or troll with some half assed question like "Why are Aspies so dumb acting?" or something then the rules shouldn't effect you. I'm sure not gonna leave a bunch of spam threads all over the place just because there are no rules, and I'm not gonna leave troll posts around either. It's certainly different, in that opinions and thoughts aren't censored. No outright attacks on people because that's just not good. But folks are welcome to throw down and bow up at each other in threads during debates or what have you. And unlike WP I won't be saying "That's whatever ist, you shouldn't say that" or "you didn't phrase that gently enough", and unlike that other forum I won't be saying "you can't have an opinion on autism we don't endorse" etc. Rules won't effect you as long as you don't go off and do some stupid half cocked bullshit. Which I doubt you would do anyway.

Also, I'm not always here and we need mods to clean up the spam and shit. Sometimes I go a week or so without being online. If there is a real problem there needs to be somebody around who can take care of it. I'm going to try to be online more but sometimes I just can't.

They will just delete the forum without warning or something if they catch a lot of that. Also, I didn't see the other post you meant. Message me and link me to it or tell me again there please.

That was not an effective way to communicate on my part, sorry about that, I meant Requests and suggestions, 3rd page. I have to be assigned a specific board to moderate it basically, don't worry with it, I hit Io up about it and he should be able to fix, its not like we have spam at the moment.

I think be nice and do not play mean are a bit non-specific and open too open to interpretation. Maybe something along the lines of attack the argument not the person should be added. Also maybe some rules that serve to protect the nature of this forum as you envision it.

These are not rules, per se, but they are things that I think people are better off understanding and agreeing to upfront... You can disagree with someone and still support them. Sometimes in order to support someone, you *must* disagree with them. All disagreements are not personal attacks. People have different perspectives, and just because someone's is not aligned with yours does not mean they are personally attacking you. Those two things are the things that I see that most often cause threads to derail (aside from obvious things like name calling, attacking, etc.) The only thing that would probably make me leave this board is if "being supportive" is equated with "kumbaya, we all must agree with each other at all times and if you don't feel the same way you should keep your mouth shut." Olive, I would have to come and visit you personally if that ever happened, because I would be certain you were invaded by body snatchers!

Can I ask what your definition of trolling is? Because that is a pretty vague word that is usually used by moderators to ban anyone who says something they don’t agree with. I agree with bim0g. This is very disappointing. If I understand correctly you left WP because you didn’t like the rules there. So you started this forum, so now you can make your own rules. Thats good for you, but for the users of the forum, it’s just another set of rules to comply with. Whats the difference between this forum and WP? Just another control situation, with pretty much the same rules.

IMHO, trolls are not a true part of the community. They join for one reason, and one reason only: to provoke. Trolls are not trying to participate or engage. Another way someone can troll is to come to a forum and set up an argument to get a specific response in order to prove some kind of point. Another way someone can troll is by joining a forum under false pretenses to manipulate the members of the forum.
And then there are some trolls who just come by to poke the bears. IOW they are sadistic jerks who come and say things just to get a reaction.
I have never seen a troll who ever participates in an appropriate way. They always instigate, and they usually don't stick around for long, or if they do, they cycle through personas, thinking they can keep their identity secret, but you can often tell in their syntax that you already "know" them.
I have seen people be accused of trolling when I don't think they are trolling. It is usually that they said something someone else doesn't like. But usually, if you look around the site, they will be engaging in appropriate interactions in other places. Sometimes it also happens to new posters who's first post seems...too manipulative to be true. The sad thing is, on a forum that draws autistics, it can sometimes be that they don't have the communication skills they need and they really need help.
