Is it just me or do the two main Autism/Asperger's forums come across like exclusive little clubs? There seems to be an established membership of elitist "veteran" users on both site who give the impression that they think they are in some way superior to mere ordinary mortals and thereby entitled to preferential treatment from the moderators and what's more they get it. Contrast the responses to these two threads over at WP. The first created by a newby and immediately pounced on by a mod... Why do many people think that special interests are illness? and the second created by a veteran... Things I need...and what I'm notand the mods? Conspicuous by their absence. Hopefully this forum won't develop in the same way. Fairness and consistency of moderation are absolutely basic requirements.

WP is a good ol' boy network. If you are one of the good ol’ boys, you can do or say what ever you like there. The mods there are just a bunch of useless idiots, put there to control everybody else. Notice how they tell you, you are free to post whatever you like, but then they ban those they don’t agree with. No explanation those people just disappear one day. That’s been going on for years.

VERY clique ridden and rather unfriendly. There is a definite anti-NT undercurrent about the place too. Just pay it a visit as a casual observer, without joining, and look at some of the threads. The vast majority of active threads on there are inconsequential ones about counting, games and random topics like that.

Is it? I can well believe it. I guess that once someone gets accustomed to throwing their weight around and feeling superior they're loath to give it up.

Oh well you can tell I was never a mod, I'm using the same user name that I used on AC, which is an acronym of the user name I used on WP.

In every online community I have participated in, being a mod is a thankless task, it's sort of like being an unpaid middle manager, you have little real authority and are expected to carry out a set of rules you probably don't fully agree with, and everyone hates you for it. They usually burn out before long. I know OOM asked people to be mods here, but I wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole. My life is hard and messy enough already!

Nobody has asked me if I'd like to be one, but I'd politely decline anyway. I honestly don't see the need for mods.

I don’t really understand the purpose of moderators in forums. Except maybe to delete SPAM. If someone is bothering you on a forum, you should just use the block feature, rather then reporting their post. I never report posts, except for SPAM. Not even people I have issues with. Trying to get someone banned off a forum, is just messed up IMHO. How can people have a legitimate discussion about anything in a forum, if they have to keep sucking up to mods, to avoid getting banned? It makes no sense to me.

I have never been a mod anywhere either, except in chat rooms. In those cases, it was because I was friends with the owners of the chat rooms, and I just banned anyone who pissed us off. But thats in a private chat room. A forum is more like a public place, where people should be free to discuss different opinions.

Yeah, as long as the admin holds the power to evict anyone from the site, who continually and deliberately tries to provoke trouble, I don't see the need for any other moderation. An appeal to people's common sense is usually sufficient. People are entitled to disagree with each other, after all if we all agreed about everything there'd be nothing to discuss or debate. It only becomes a problem when someone becomes abusive, threatening or launches personal attacks. If that sort of behavior becomes sustained then at that point perhaps the admin might need to intervene and message the offender privately to suggest that they tone things down.

I need mods for two reasons. One is because I know diddly about tech stuff. I'm 51. I need somebody around 25 who knows all the computer stuff.
The second reason is that if you remember there are lots of hurt feelings and running to tell in WP. Someone will need to smooth things over when that happens and I'm probably not the best person for that. My way of ending fights, even between the kids is to either let them fight it out as long as nobody gets seriously hurt or tell them to suck it up and go on with their day. That probably won't work here.
I'm trying y'all. I'm not online every day either.
